Botox is a purified form of a toxin obtained from bacteria. It can do wonders in medical as well as cosmetic fields. It has been in use for smoothing wrinkles for decades. The product is injected in the treatment area and works by blocking the signals to the muscles, hence stopping them from making wrinkles on the skin by relaxing them. They are perfect for smoothing facial lines caused by muscle movement.

How Botox treatment is done

Botox treatment is a short out-patient procedure that takes few minutes and generally no local anesthesia is required. The steps involved in the procedure are as follows:

  • Firstly skin is cleansed thoroughly
  • Then the area is marked where treatment is to be given
  • Finally small amounts of Botox are injected in the specific muscles

Risks and complications

The risks of treatment include:

  • flu-like symptoms: including a headache – for the first 24 hours after treatment
  • bruising: at the injection site
  • temporary weakness and droopiness of your facial features: for example, eyelids or eyebrows may droop temporarily if the injected medicine moves into these areas
  • your body developing resistance to the treatment: if it's repeated too frequently

In rare cases, serious problems can develop in the hours, days or weeks after treatment, including blurred or double vision (if the area around the eyes is injected)
